means. in president obama's fy13 budget request, 15% of the total federal budget goes to the department of defense, excluding war funding. there is an additional $88.5 billion of war funding in there as well. social security gets 23% of the federal budget and medicare gets 14%. medicaid gets 7%. 6% goes to interest on the national debt. that is actually going to explode over the next decade and by the end of the decade we will very likely be spending more on and just on the national debt than we do on defense are medicare and medicaid. and about 14% of the federal budget goes to all non-defense discretionary spending, so social security and medicare and medicaid is primarily a mandatory spending programs of talking about the discretionary part of the budget here. that gives you an idea of the order of magnitude. the big items in the federal budget, of course on one side of the equation you have got revenues and on the other side you have got the big ones that are social security, defense and medicare. those are the big one so if you want to frame this as a simple choice or a priority, i

of the fairies homeland security apparatus is. if we fired every single one of them from president obama's secretary to the person who is collecting tolls at yellowstone, to the guy or woman who sitting in some nor read air defense facility in north dakota right now, if we got rid of all of them, all their wages, other benefits we would save a lot of money. $435 billion last year. that would have reduced the defit by even 40%. we would have still had almost a record deficit if we had no federal government employees whatsoever. so where does all the money go? well, the federal government in a sense takes a lot of money and send it out again. the federal government in a sense is a military with a big health and welfare and retirement fund attached to it. $2.2 trillion is the money that came into the federal government last year, when out in the form of benefits, and much of the rest went to state and local grants to state and local governments. so it is not going to be possible to reduce the federal deficit by nickel and dining federal employees. doesn't mean were not going to try but we w

insurance, the reason why i am leaning toward obama -- and i really do not know what obamacare is, but from what i understand ifrom mitt romney, he doesn't believe in any care. my husband has high blood pressure. he was not a mechanic ever insurance we went to, and he could not pass the physical. the insurance company would not injure him. i tried to buy him insurance. as soon as he said he was employed independent, nobody would injure him. that is my big issue. when people have worked their whole lives and they get sick, we should be able to buy insurance. host: dr. makary, what role -- and if you want to address her specific point, that is fine, but what role do the insurance companies play in this unaccountableness, as you call it? guest: we have had no good ways to measure the quality of health care. the insurance companies have been eager to get into the business of looking at performance and use it as a way to pay hospitals and doctors. the problem is, we have not had a good measure until now. there is a very exciting revolution taking place in medical care now. it is in medicare webs

in washington at the pentagon, americans took a moment to mark the sullen anniversary. president obama and the first lady paid tribute to the victims of the attack at the 9/11 pentagon memorial dedicated on september 11th, 2008, the pentagon memorial is the oldest of the three memorials. for many today it was the place they wanted to be to take time to reflect and remember. fox 5's tom fitzgerald live at the pentagon. tom. >> reporter: brian, you know, this was a different memorial than we have seen in past years. president obama made his address, as you said, this morning to victims' families and pentagon officials, and the memorial itself remained closed until noon today. we can tell you that the size of the crowds we saw today were smaller but it is also true to say that the people who came here told us they still feel very strongly about this place and that day 11 years after 9/11. on a stretch of land just next to the pentagon sits 183 benches bearing 183 names, one for each of the victims that dade here on 9/11. >> i don't know, it's just a wonderful place to sit and reflect. >>

to president obama, people have accused elected officials of using these anniversaries for political gain, especially during a presidential campaign. there's also a sense after the big ten-year anniversary last year, perhaps it's time to scale back these big commemorative events and allow the victims' families to have more privacy, more intimacy. so this year politicians have been banned from speaking at the ground zero ceremony, and that includes president obama. instead he will be attending a private ceremony at the pentagon memorial. he will also be speaking with wounded soldiers at walter reed. here is white house spokesperson jay carney. >> he certainly hopes and knows that americans across the country will take a moment to reflect upon the events of september 11, 2001, and all that our country has been through together since then. >> reporter: it was 11 years ago this morning that that third plane crashed into the pentagon right at 9:37 a.m. at that exact moment this morning, there will be a moment of silence at arlington national cemetery. there will also be that private ceremony a
